More about this piece
I saw this pile of squash at one of Long Island’s roadside farm stalls when we were visiting my brother and his family near Sag Harbour in October one year, taking a couple of days out from a longer trip to New York. There were also heaps of pumpkins and tomatoes, but I loved the different shapes, colours and stripes of these squash as well as the patterns that they make, almost like a fabric design. I hadn’t realised how rural it is on Long Island. There are miles of white sandy beaches and dunes, whilst Sag Harbour itself is very pretty. There’s a shop there where you can get coconut coffee, something I’ve never had anywhere else. It’s delicious.
