Pomegranates
More about this piece

These pomegranates from Shepherds Bush Market presented an irresistible opportunity to make use of every shade of red, pink, blue and purple in my paint collection.  It was also a chance to experiment with adding clear resin to the finished painting to highlight the jewel-like glamour of the pomegranate seeds, which was enormous fun.

Both fresh pomegranates and pomegranate molasses are great ingredients.  I have a favourite recipe I learned at a Books for Cooks course on Moorish dishes taught by Jennifer Joyce.  It features a winning combination of crushed chickpeas with olive oil, lemon, garlic, chili, feta cheese, coriander, mint, red onion and toasted cumin seeds, but the element which transforms it is the pomegranate molasses.  It's dark, treacly and both sweet and sour.  Highly recommended.
